As an experienced sedation dentist Dr. Hansen & Associates will evaluate your needs and discuss any aversion to traditional dental practices you might have. Your concerns are our primary focus at Hansen dentistry which means we’ll suggest an alternative solution that is right for you. We strive to create a soothing and comfortable environment where you can relax and feel good knowing your nerves can be set at ease. We understand even the thought of a trip to the dentist is stressful and scary.
Dr. David and Stephen Hansen are among a select few dentists in the Tacoma area who offer sedation dentistry as an option to their patients. We offer you a range of sedation techniques that will allow you to undergo your dental treatment in a relaxed, calm state environment.
Sedation Dentistry makes use of sedatives in a dental practice is to ease your anxieties and make the procedure as pleasant as possible, while allowing Dr. Hansen to work easily and efficiently. During a conscious sedation appointment, your dentist is responsible for administering the drugs in safe doses based on the therapeutic index. The appropriate amount of medicine is based on your weight, height, and overall level of anxiety. Sometimes a pill may be given the night before the procedure, or on the day of the procedure. These drugs can vary from oral sedatives, such as Valium, Sonata, and Ativan, to nitrous oxide or laughing gas. The effects of these solutions could linger after the procedure but should pass soon after. It is advised that the patient be accompanied by a responsible adult for a safe trip back home. It’s imperative the patient is not allowed to drive or operate heavy or complicated machinery for at least twenty-four hours after the procedure. Dental sedation makes the patient relax and forget the intricacies of the treatment but the amnesic side effect may not be permanent.
Sedation Dentistry Examples;
- Local Anesthesia – Our doctors take great care to administer pain-free injections when using local anesthesia. This form of sedation is administered by injecting medication into tissue or by applying a medication topically to an area to eliminate sensation.
- Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas” is a complimentary service we offer to our patients to provide mild relaxation for patients with minor anxiety issues in need of treatment. Nitrous Oxide is an odorless, colorless gas that kills pain and provides a euphoric feeling when inhaled. It works very rapidly and is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes after the gas supply is stopped. You can safely drive home from your procedure and won’t need an escort. This type of inhalation sedation is very safe. It has very few side effects and the drugs used have no ill effects on the heart, lungs, liver, kidney, or brain.
- Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS) – For patients with elevated levels of fear, anxiety or dental phobia, we often recommend Oral Conscious Sedation. With OCS, a pill is taken about an hour before treatment, making the patient feel relaxed and somewhat sleepy. During treatment, most patients fall into a “dozing” state, but remain responsive enough to answer our questions. Most patients will not remember the treatment once it is over. One of many benefits associated with OCS is that patients are able to complete years of needed dental treatments in a single visit. Our doctors frequently perform complex restorative treatments including >>> while patients rest and relax.
